Puppy Kindergarten Classes
The
best time to begin training your puppy is...immediately!According
to current research on puppy development, an 8 week old puppy can learn
as easily as an adult. In fact, puppies may learn more between the ages
of 3 and 16 weeks than in the remaining course of their lives! Puppies
are learning sponges and normally adore going to school. Not only do
the puppies love it, their owners tell us that puppy class is the
highlight of
their week. Attending puppy class is one of the best things you can do
to facilitate your puppy growing up to his or her full potential as a
great dog and your true
companion.
What
will my puppy learn? Your
puppy will learn basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, and
come. We will teach the puppies to ring a bell to go outside to do
their potty business. Most importantly, your puppy will learn the
necessary social skills to interact appropriately with other people and
dogs. Proper socialization during puppyhood translates into a
well-adjusted adult dog.
What will I
learn? You
will learn how to train your puppy using primarily positive
reinforcement
and gentle training techniques. Additionally, you will receive advice
and tips on
how to housetrain your pup and how to deal with normal puppy behaviors
like mouthiness (play biting) and jumping up.
How long
will I stay in Puppy Kindergarten? How
long you remain in Puppy Kindergarten will depend on how quickly you
and your puppy master the Move-Up
Skills for
that Level and how soon you feel
you would like to move on to the next Level. Stay as long as the class
remains of value to you and your pup; you might decide to spend your
entire two-month Pass in Puppy Kindergarten or you might feel ready to
move to a more advanced Level during that Pass as you and your puppy
acquire skills. You are welcome to stay
in Kindergarten until your puppy reaches the cut-off age of six months.
Once your puppy
reaches the age limit, you may move your puppy under the same Pass into
a Level One or
Level Two class depending on your puppy's skill level.
How many
other puppies will there be in the class? Classes are kept small to maximize personal
attention. Generally, there are no more than 7 puppies in a class.
How is the
class structured? Working
one-on-one with your puppy is alternated with group puppy play
sessions. Exuberant play, interrupted with frequent calming
sessions and obedience training will teach your pup to calm more easily
after getting revved up. In addition to interacting with the other
puppies in the class, your puppy will be handled by the other puppy
owners in the class. Positive interaction with unfamiliar
people
in puppyhood results reduces the chance of behavior problems
later
in life.
How old
should my puppy be? Puppies
are accepted between the ages of 9 to 20 weeks by the start of the
first
class. Your puppy needs to have been at your home for at least two
weeks prior to starting class.
What is
required in order to enroll in the class? In order to attend class, puppies need to be
in good health and current on vaccinations given by a licensed
veterinarian.
