Move-Up Skills Checklist
for Group Classes
Puppy Kindergarten
(Entry Level Class)
- Sit: Puppy
will sit promptly when first asked without needing to be lured with a
treat.
- Zen down:
Puppy will relax for 5 seconds while gently restrained on his or her
side.
- Name Game:
Puppy consistently and immediately looks away from distractions and
toward handler when prompted .
- Recall:
Puppy comes when called across the room when first asked
without added distractions.
- Relaxation:
When handler sits in a chair, pup
relaxes within 5 seconds on a loose leash. Nothing is said to
the pup.
- Greeting:
Pup greets other class participants without jumping on them: rear on
the floor, front feet on the ground, no
creeping or moving
forward.
- Ring a bell to signal needing to
go outside (promotes potty training): (Not a required skill for moving
up.)

Doggie Grade School
(Entry Level Class)
- Sit:
Dog will sit promptly when first asked without needing to be lured with
a treat.
- Name Game:
Dog will consistently and immediately look away from distractions and
toward handler when prompted.
- Recall:
Dog comes when called across the room when first asked without added
distractions.
- Relaxation:
When handler moves to a new chair, pup automatically–without
anything being said or hand signaled–settles down with 5
seconds.
Leash is loose.
- Greeting:
Dog greets other class participants without jumping on them: rear on
the floor, front feet on the ground, no creeping or
moving
forward.
Doggie Middle School
- Sit-Stay:
Verbal and hand signal, handler ten feet away
- Leash
Training: No pulling on the leash for ten steps, no
distractions
- Recall:
Handler is across the room. Mild distractions. One cue.
- Down:
Verbal and hand signal, one cue, owner standing up straight
- Greeting:
Leash is loose, greeter can pet dog for several seconds while
dog’s rear remains on floor
Doggie High School
- Sit-Stay:
Handler is 5 ft from dog. Dog remains on stay when presented with three
different distractions, one of them food, another a toy.
- Down-Stay
for 3 minutes: Handler is at dog’s side and
there are no distractions. Dog remains on stay for at least 3 minutes
until released.
- Loose
Leash Walking: Dog maintains a loose leash throughout 3
direction changes.
- Recall:
Dog
comes immediately and in a straight line to the handler across the room
amid strong distractions with one command and allows collar to be
grasped.
- Place:
One verbal and hand signal. Handler remains 5 feet from the rug/place.
Dog’s response is immediate and accurate.
- Leave-It:
Dog moves 3 ft away from a good treat in the handler’s
enclosed fist.
Doggie College
- Down-Stay
for 5 minutes: Handler across the room, no distractions,
dog doesn’t break stay the whole time. Treats given two
minute intervals.
- Heel
- Emergency
Recall:
Dog’s response is immediate, fast, and enthusiastic. Dog runs
across large open space to owner and allows collar to be grasped.
- Leave-It: High
value treat is exposed in handler’s open hand under
dog’s nose. Dog moves 3 feet away when asked.
- Place: Verbal
and hand signal, one cue, handler 10 ft from Place.
- Wait: Verbal
and hand signal, one cue, owner out the door first, leash drags on floor
- Drop on
Recall: When asked to come, dog drops mid-way to owner
when asked to ‘Down’
- Trick:
